| | | Backpack for attached long lens Lo all,
Anyone recommend a medium sized backpack that can take my D50 with a bigma attached? Obviously will need to be able to take a couple of other smaller lenses, extension rings, TC etc. Better still if its got a waterproof cover.
I'm currently using a lowepro ..slingshot, I think. Great bag but not got the room for the big lense attached to the camera and I don't want to have to lug around extra little bags for it.
Ta in advance!

Can't remember the bag number... but I use one with the bigma and D50 attached. |

| | | Re: Backpack for attached long lens For general use, I use the Lowepro Nature Trekker AW backpack. It will take a D200 (with grip), and a mounted 300mm f/2.8 lens (hood reversed), as well as room for several smaller lenses. You also get the day pack included in the deal, which attaches to the rear of the pack, where you can store extra clothing and food. It has, of course, (the AW designation) the All Weather cover that stores in the base of the bag, which protect the bag contents from downpours etc. Another feature is the weather-resistant zips, plus various loops to attach monopods, or similar. The bag, on its own, is a fairly heavy item, so the weight factor must be taken into consideration.
It's a comfortable pack once the straps are adjusted correctly, so wearing the bag for extended periods is possible when getting to out-of-the-way locations. It costs around the £160 mark, but the protection it affords is worth the money.
I've fallen onto my back wearing this set-up, and the camera and lenses suffered no damage at all. Testament to its quality materials and construction.

| | | Re: Backpack for attached long lens I got one from the famous site. Its a Gem and it is a gem took it to Africa with my gear and it was great. this is the bag GEM COMPU/SLR TREKKING BAG - AW Laptop/Camera Backpack. It was plenty big enough for my Sony Alpha 100 plus attached Tamron 200-500. There is also space for a laptop but I got it because it was long enough for my camera plus lens and was OK to go through airport scanners etc as hand luggage.
Main compartment dimensions - Height 38cm, Depth 13cm, Width 29cm
Notebook / laptop compartment - Height 38cm, Depth 4cm, Width 30.5cm
External dimensions - Height 46cm, Depth 20cm, Width 36cm
Padded camera compartment with adjustable padded dividers and a number of laminated organizer pockets
Padded notebook / laptop zipped compartment with a quick-release buckle for added security
Additional zipped front pocket with organizer pockets
Padded contoured adjustable shoulder straps, sternum strap and waist belt
Quick-access tripod holder
Weather Cover to offer protection against not only weather but also dust
Suitable for 1-2 SLRs and 4-6 lenses (80-200mm f/2.8) in addition to a large notebook computer and accessories
Suitable for Airport Carry On
Hope that helps

construction.
RichBrew | I have one of these and would recommend it highly, as RichBrew says, the AW cover is excellent in the heaviest of downpours. If you are using a larger prime lens you could go for the Lens Trekker although you would only be able to carry the one lens and a body with a small pocket on the front for your CF cards (or film!).

| | | Re: Backpack for attached long lens I have just bought a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW and its just the right size for my EOS 20D with my Bigma attached. There's plenty of room left for another body and a lens or two.
The bag retails at around £70 and is well built and extremely comfortable to wear, I am really pleased with it. |

Even though I can't wear it, as it's too much for my back, it holds plenty of gear. As you say, a Camera plus Bigma mounted plus my 150mm, 10-20mm, the lens that came with the camera (whatever that is!) plus 3 x TC's, a set of extension tubes, loads of stuff in the pockets.
It's a sturdy, weather protected bag that I can also highly recommend. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
