I'm not sure about lenses, I'm not overly familiar with the Nikon range (being a Canon user). If you do go for the 1dmkIII I would favour the Canon 500 f4, this seems to be superb lens.
Matt | I was seriously considering a 1d mark 3, but decided against it for the AF reason. Instead I've ordered a 40D. |

Have you decided on your choice of lens yet?

Matt | Of course, as if I couldn't make up my mind. I ordered the Sigma 120-300 then I cancelled it!!
I'm waiting for the credit to come through before I order again, I don't think my Mrs. would be too happy paying for two of them on one credit card bill.
I cancelled because even though I thought I was buying UK stock, I found out I wasn't. I didn't fancy having to rely on a third party internet site for any warranty work.
I'll be paying a bit more to be sure I can get Sigma UK service done if needed. |

Dave P. | But Nikon will be so pleased to get Andy rouse, that I doubt
he has to pay a penny for whatever he wants .............. sigh.
And then he can sell all his canon stuff ................. |

Dave P. | And the ultimate winners are...us, the consumer. So long as the leap-frogging continues, we will all benefit from the advances made by the camera companies vying for our custom.
As for Andy Rouse switching to Nikon, it's obviously what he needed to do to keep producing top grade images in a very competitive field, and keep putting food on the table. To a professional, it's making a living that counts, and if it means using a different system to do it, so be it. Nikon don't give gear to anyone, so he has to buy what he needs with his own money, but it is tax deductible in his case.

| | | Re: Canon 1D Mk 3 advice I have a Canon 1DMK3, well I am on my third.......... I have a Blue Dot version now, which is a post affected range model and I have to say it is awesome. I have the 100-400 attached most of the time and often add the 1.4x converter.
I have spoken with Andy Rouse as to his move to Nikon D3. For him at the time it made business sense. He was at the time having issues with his 1DMK3 even after the repair. Nikon lauched the D3 just at the right time for Andy. That said Andy has not tried the new production models 1DMK3's and has said that he is pleased people are now getting the camera that they should have got at launch.
For info my first died of err99, second was in affected range but was good, however my dealer changed it in December (xmas eve) for a new Blue dot (post affected range) model. I understand that the Febuary models on now come without the Blue Dot on the box as this is no longer required to identify good units. In other words all affected units are either sold (& fixed) or returned to canon. |

Andy had to buy his Nikon kit, however I dare say he got a very good discount at Warehouse Express.
He is still using (ocasionally) his Canon kit albeit 1DMK2's, not sure it would fetch much as his kit is heavily used and abused......
Mind, if he wants to give it away I will take it off his hands |

| | | Re: Canon 1D Mk 3 advice I recently got a very good deal on a Canon 1D Mk3 using it with my 100-400mm but you'll probably be looking at a huge amount more now the prices have gone up... I've had it for about 3 months now and cannot fault the AF. At the Focus on Imaging show I was taking a couple of quick test shots on their range of super-tele lenses I have to say my next wildlife lens will probably be 500mm f4 from Canon.. however it will be a good couple of years before the bank heals enough!!
Good points for both the 1D and D3.. Both very fast cameras, however I would have to say the 1D wins here.. however you have the added flexiblity with the D3 of it being full frame (so you could use it for more genres of photography), and you have the ability to switch to cropped sensor bringing the MP count down to 8 (I believe) and increasing the speed that way..
Probably what i would do is get a feel for the bodies in your local camera shop and then maybe rent them for a month to get the feel for them.. Could be a possibility for you. Since you have Canon at the minute perhaps sticking with the menu system is a good idea, however this is only a very small factor in the scheme of things...
Good luck with your choice,
