| | | 400D + x2 teleconverter This is the first time that I have had to try out this set up due to the bad weather conditions up here needed to get closer to the birds and at this moment in time have not got fiunds for the 50-500mm lens so thought I would try this set up here are some shots that I took today.
Canon 400D with 300mm lens + x2 teleconverter used manual focus
Set at ISO 100 with exp at 1/400 @5/6 set on AV mode lens set at 250mm
Canon 400D with 300mm lens + x2 teleconverter used manual focus with mirror lock up.
Set at ISO 100 with exp at 1/640 @5/6 set on AV mode lens set at 245mm
Set up is not 100% but it does allow you to get closer but you have to use a support due to weight these were taken from inside the greenhouse what you think any criticism welcome

Congratulations on what I think are great shots, I have a 1.4 teleconverter and a 400D camera with a 300 lens and a lot of people said that this set up would not work very well but I think you have shown that it does.

Regards John B | as one of the people in question i should perhaps clarify that we said it wouldnt work very well (or at all) with autofocus - manual focus works okay as bill has shown but it isnt all that on moving subjects.
the other limitation of using a 2xtc with an f5.6 lens is that you create a max apperture of f11 which isn't enough to give a decently blurred background in most situations
this set up is better than nothing particularly if long glass is out of your price range but it isnt the equal of a 500mm lens for serious wildlife photography

Were these shots taken with a tripod or hand held.

| | | Re: 400D + x2 teleconverter Well done Bill.
Hopefully the better light is coming soon so we can get better photos.
I've been struggling with the low light level as well.
