| | | Canon to launch new 800mm lens? On a US based photography forum which I visit, they are talking about 2 new lenses from Canon out soon. A faster 200 mm and a F5.6 800 mm. Details appear a little sketchy yet but the rumour is that they will sell for around $6000 each. So start saving now. |

This quote came from Photo answers: Quote: |
Canon has today (January 24) announced its latest D-SLR, which is sure to be of interest to all budding enthusiasts. The Canon EOS 450D features a 12.2 megapixel CMOS sensor (that's 2.1 megapixels more than the EOS 40D), EOS Integrated Cleaning System, 3.0in LCD with Live View mode and a new 9-point AF system. Expect the EOS 450D to be priced around the £600 mark
| Sounds interesting.

I'm sure it's a nice camera but Canon have again adopted the odd strategy of giving more pixels to their entry level model than their intermediate model (40D). It seems that the entry level market is impressed by pixels and Canon feel they need 12m to compete.
There were a couple of high res sample images (from the Canon Japan site) on another forum earlier and they did look a bit noisy, even one at ISO 200. I think that's the price you pay for cramming too many pixels on a small sensor.

The EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM will be available from June 2008 priced at £8999.99 RRP inc. VAT / €13299.99 inc. VAT.
They claim it will be Light enough to allow for handheld shooting. But at 4.5kg +the camera it sounds heavy to me. |

Matt | Yes, I stopped worrying about pixels once past the 5m. mark. 12m does nothing for me. So far Canon have done very well in limiting noise. If they've gone too far this time, and it sounds as though they might have done, I think that's a big mistake. It's something most of the manufactures seem to think they have to do, especially for the lower-medium markets.
As for those lenses, I think I'll wait a month or two before I buy them! |

Their selection of these two new lenses is rather odd. |

| | | Re: Canon to launch new 800mm lens? I have been expecting Canon to replace the old 400mm with a 500mm with IS which would be a direct challenge to Sigma. There does seem to be a gap in the Canon larger lens 'cheaper' range. |

Paul | Mumby, In theory you can add any amount of TC's but to get anywhere near that focal length you have have got to add 2 2x convertors and one 1 x1.4.
You will lose a massive 5 stops and the image quality will be terrible.
The 200mm F/2.8 (don't think they do an F/2) is a super lens on it's own without TC's. Just have to get close enough.
Judge for yourself........
