| | | canon 40d/sigma400mm apo lens problem good day to all, can anyone give me some advice please i recently bought a new canon 40d camera, but i'm having a problem using my sigma 400mm apo lens with it. the problem is, it will not let me use any aperture other than f5.6. is this a fault with the camera or the lens? |

| | | Re: canon 40d/sigma400mm apo lens problem I don't know a deal, but if light is bad it restricts aperture I can use in the AV mode on my cannon 400D on a 100-300mm lens

| | | Re: canon 40d/sigma400mm apo lens problem no thats not it , its not working in any light it just refuses to take a photo even in full manual. its as if the camera doesn't know how to tell the lens to change aperture. but thanks anyway. |

| | | Re: canon 40d/sigma400mm apo lens problem Just a guess, I assume you have the Sigma 400mm F5.6 APO lens, if this is the case it sounds like the camera is selecting the maximum size aperature to suite lighting conditions. Try increasing the ISO up to say 1600 ISO and see what happens.

| | | Re: canon 40d/sigma400mm apo lens problem Sigma and other 3rd party lenses are built to be compatible with the cameras out at the time they are made. Unlike Canon\Nikon, 3rd party lenses cannot be built to be 'future-proof' against new camera models.
Chances are, your lens isn't fully compatible with the new Canon. It should be possible to get it upgraded, but you'd need to get in contact with Sigma. From what I've heard, their customer service is excellent and they should be able to sort you out.
Hope this helps!

| | | Re: canon 40d/sigma400mm apo lens problem I'm afraid you may not be able to get it fixed. I've read on a few web sites that Sigma no longer do the chip upgrade for this lens. The fault is exactly as you said, it will only work wide open at F5.6.
I hope I'm wrong, there's certainly no harm in asking. |

| | | Re: canon 40d/sigma400mm apo lens problem Given it is an old lense then it certainly sounds like it needs to be re-chipped. Sigma will be able to do it provided they still have a stock of chips for this particular lens. Give their service centre a call on 01707 329999, they will need to know the lens model and the serial number.
