| | | Camera Life Some one told me the other day that digital cameras have a life span, what happens to the camera im not sure, (sensor gives up the ghost possibly) mines a Canon sx is. Does anyone know the life of this type of camera, how many shots is it good for. Does this happen to all digital cameras no matter what the price. |

It's important to note that the number is a mean = average. This means that with a MTBF of 100,000, it could fail on shot number 1 or 200,000.

| | | Re: Camera Life It depends on the camera. For example with Nikon DSLRs the shutters on the entry level models are rated at 50,000 actuations, those on the high end enthusiast level models like the D300 are rated at 150,000 actuations, and the top end professional bodies like the D3 are rated at 300,000 actuations.
This means that the shutter mechanism has been designed and built to last for at least that many shots and that the figure has been consistently achieved in test labs. It's still possible that a shutter will fail before the quoted number (my D300 failed at 58,000 and was replaced under warranty). It's also possible for many cameras will go beyond, sometimes way beyond, the rating.
A dead shutter doesn't necessarily write off the camera. If my D300 hadn't still been under warranty it would have cost around £200 for the replacement shutter. Not cheap but considerably less than the cost of a new camera.

| | | Re: Camera Life Don't know about the model on the OP but you can get the shutter replaced on many cameras. Mine is supposed to last for 200,000 shots and cost about £200 to replace. Not a bad price if I ever get anywhere near 200k shots.

| | | Re: Camera Life Should have said Canon SX 30 IS at £400 probably better to get a new one, that's if it could be replaced. With any luck it may just last me. |

| | | Re: Camera Life I've just had to send my 7D in for a shutter repair. This so called semi pro camera has "only" done around 30,000 shutter actuations. It'll cost around the £300 mark to get it fixed. Not bad for a £1,000+ camera that's just 21 months old.
MY 40D also had to have a new shutter fitted, that managed almost 40,000. Neither of these reached the supposed expected failure rate.
For me this is the last chance for Canon cameras. If any further failures happen I'll ditch the lot. |
