nothing really special or exotic but i like the way it's turned out

It's a nice shot for sure. If it were mine then I'd be tempted to slightly desaturate some of the brown patches near the subject simply because the colours are too similar to the actual bird and by doing so the subject would stand out more.

Agree with Jason re the saturation of the background and that its a great image. Would add that if you only sharpen the bird and not the details in the log it would also help the bird 'pop'

I disagree, on the basis that the detailed texture of the rotten log is one of the best bits of the photo. Likewise with the suggestion to desaturate the autumn leaves behind - you could, to focus attention more on the bird, but at the expense of a more interesting photo overall.

I mentioned the over sharpening as the original post was an image of a chaffinch on a log not here is my image of a log with a chaffinch.

On my screen it seems the high frequency details have been over sharpened.

I agree that the background behind the bird is a little cluttered with the colours standing out too much and drawing the eye away from the bird itself. Other than that it is a great image but need to take more care with the background.

I would try reducing the saturation of the surounds, but not too much.

Maybe less sharpening on the log, and smooth the background as its quite busy.

But my main recomendation would be less log. I try to stick to the rule of thirds and would reduce the log to about 1/3 of the screen.

It is a nice shot anyway as it is.
