| | | Photo Downloader? Hi everyone,
I heard somewhere about these 'photo downloaders' which you can take out with you and put your memory card into to store all your photos. Last weekend when I was at Portland I kept running out of space on my memory card so missed a few photo opportunities while I was deleting shots. I was wondering if anyones got any information on one of these downloaders, I don't want anything particularly fancy, as long as it does the job and can store probably around 2000 photos (if that's possible). I haven't got a clue how much these things cost so I don't know about a price range at the moment.
Many thanks

| | | Re: Photo Downloader? A 40GB 2.5 in palm held HD will cost about £90. Which I'd sort of thing about if I was going away for a couple of weeks or more. Vosonic - Multimedia Viewer and XS Drive Portable Storage Devices
OTOH I can store 260 hirez jpeg photos on a 1GB card and they cost about £10 each. So you might think about just getting a couple of extra ones. |

| | | Re: Photo Downloader? Thanks for the links, they look like pretty good bits of equipment. I think I may have to get one before the summer holidays, but I will also consider getting another memory card.
Thanks both for your help

| | | Re: Photo Downloader? I think that a spare card (or two) is the easiest - and lightest option. I have recommended before that if you are buying cards &c do it abroad: they seem to be 20-50% cheaper in Spain and France .... I've never checked out the internet of course .... Quote:

| | | Re: Photo Downloader? A generic 1GB compact flash from 7 day shop is £17 notes - this is pretty representative of internet prices - you can get cheaper but beware of very cheap products which tend to fail often
this means that if you only want a couple of gb then extra cards are the way to go - however in terms of price per gig downloaders are much cheaper .
basically if you are only out for the day then cards will do but a week or so away will need a downloader - however if you are going treking in the back of beyond - downloaders take power meaning lots of spare batteries , in that case lots of spare cards will be a cheaper and lighter option.

Guy | The spare memory card route is lighter and easier to store,
you could buy a lot of them for the price of a downloader

you could buy a lot of them for the price of a downloader | although it depends on how many pics you are likely to take - say fifteen notes as a ball park figure for a generic 1 GB CF card - you can get a 40GB downloader for about 90 notes - this will buy you 6 gb in cards.
to put it another way 40GB in cards will cost £600 !
most photographers combine the two - I have 4GB in 1GB cards and a further 2 in 512MB cards - this is enough for a weekend away from base
I also have a 40 GB downloader which i use if i am away for longer periods - it all depends on what you are doing and how long you are doing it for.
pros like rouse who are away for months at a time generally use a downloader for during the day back up and also take a laptop to review , edit and back up images each night.

| | | Re: Photo Downloader? Thanks for the advice everyone,
This is going to take some thinking, because I'm still not completely sure what to do. If I have enough money I will try both options because I think both would be useful. At the moment I think I only have one 512mb card, possibly 1gb, but still it holds about 230 photos and I used that up very quickly on a nice day out so I can imagine what I'd be like if I was on a week long holiday in France! I will spend some more time researching the two options. Thanks for the advice, it has been really helpful.
