| | | Views on my outline bird photo web site please Well. Less than six months into bird photography and I think I've got enough photos to start building a web site.
Non commercial, and it's the way I've gone for years now to display my hobby photos.
Big decision these days is what screen format/resolution to allow for.
After some thought and research I've gone for 1600 x 900. But set up the three index pages I've done so far so that they can be read down to 1280 x 720 with a bit more scrolling.
When I start posting the actual piccies they will probably be at around 900 x 650 (ish), so should show ok on virtually any browser.
It would help a great deal if Wab'ers could let me know how the three index pages done so far look on what I assume will be a variety of browsers and screeen sizes etc. The most important thing is that the links and wording are in the right place and can be got to without too much scrolling and faffing around.
Please don't expect lavish techno stuff. I'm still at the stage when I can only just about turn the PC on. And I find it easiest just to write very basic html coding myself rather than use templates or play around with CSS etc.
It takes a few seconds for the background image to download.
The web site is Kent Yeti's Bird Photos
Cheers,
Bryan

| | | Re: Views on my outline bird photo web site please Looking good Bryan - it overfills my screen down here on the desktop but thats cos I'm on a small old monitor - I suspect upstairs on the new lappy I will be able to see everything at one go.
Looking forward to seeing how you progress! Good luck

Pauline | Thank Pauline. When it overfills do the links and text still stay in the white/grey areas? They should do, but it helps to know!

Perhaps, like me you have some young nerdish family members who can help you out? I have found my stepson invaluable in the past and he still holds me in enough awe to know the folly of expecting any other reward than my good will. lol
Keep at it.

Bryan | Yes I just have to scroll about to see all the pics - its not a problem!

| | | Re: Views on my outline bird photo web site please Bryan,
Viewed on my 1920x1080 monitor with different browsers. Using Opera ver.11.50
The Home Page background image is VERY muddy (smudged looking) and it appears to be made up of several incorrectly registered images. The text block looks good and I can read the copyright line (in green) located just under the text box.
The image on the index page is also smudgy and there seems to be another image underneath it. The text box is fine. Spelling mistake (Only=Ony)
The composite image on the Owls page is VERY muddy and unclear. Using IE9
The Home Page image is sharp and the text box is fine. I cannot see the copyright line at all.
The image and text box on the index page is fine.
The Owls page is fine. Using Chrome Ver.12.0
The Home Page background image is sharp but there appears to be bits of the top of the image repeated underneath the main photo. The text box is fine and I can read the copyright line.
The index page shows the same corruption as the home page - it is sharp however and the text box is fine.
The composite photo is sharp but shows the same corruption where the top of the image is repeated below the photo. The grey background on the text box is too short finishing just below the line "Long Eared Owls ......... Tawny Owls".
Hope this helps,
Bruce

| | | Re: Views on my outline bird photo web site please ...Just had a quick look on my wife's laptop using IE9.
Home page looks good however copyright line is within text box (probably as intended) whereas on my desktop PC (my earlier post) the copyright line is below the text box in both the Opera and Chrome browsers (it wasn't visible at all in my IE9).
Index page is good.
The grey text box on Owls page is too low, showing as just a narrow grey strip well below the text itself.

Bruce, that's very helpful indeed.
I need to go through your replies a couple of times to pick it all up. That may need a bit of a re think. Maybe a simpler layout.
Will post a further version later.
Many thanks for all the help.
Cheers,
Bryan

| | | Re: Views on my outline bird photo web site please PS
PS. Just used the WW3C validation service. Checks HTML coding. It looks like the problems you have seen Bruce could be caused by me using an invalid attribute, ie. putting "Background" inside tables. That does not appear to be a valid way of writing html. IE is a very forgiving for most errors. Others are not so!
I'll convert the Background etc to a single clickable image and try and work around that.
Then come back here again if I may please.
Bryan

Bruce | Bruce and others.
I've started to convert it to CSS, (Cascading Style Sheets). Which has meant a very full day re-learning that! I hope that will remove the problems that Bruce found.
At present I've just done the Home Page, (the first one you get when you go to Kent Yeti's Bird Photos ). And in fact have a bit more to do on that to get it closer to full CSS.
I can check it on 1600 x 900 monitors. But not larger ones. And so far I've checked it on IE7 and Firefox and it looks OK.
But any further views on that one page would help a lot before I start on the others.
Cheers,
Bryan
