| | | Focus screens I have recently seen in my magazines that you can obtain different focus screens for my camera (1D MKllN) but it doesnt go into any depth of what each one is best for ie (type of photography, wildlife/action/landscape), could someone give me any advice on this? I know one of them has a grid (rule of third) so is suppose this would benefit landscape photographers?
Any advice would be greatly received.

| | | Re: Focus screens I agree with Nightshade, spent a small fortune on screens and still went back to a plain one.
I would think, though, if you wnet to the Canon website, somewhere on there you could get the info you require,

| | | Re: Focus screens Thanks Davew and Nightshade for your reply, and what you say is normally true "if it aint broke dont try and mend it" (i think thats how it goes) but yes i am happy with my screen but i like to learn as much as i can about my camera and all the bits and pieces that go along with it, and when i saw these and there was very little description on them i became curious as how they were used.
I am going to go and have another look on the Canon site although i did check there and saw very little on them.
Thanks
Bev.

| | | Re: Focus screens I used to have an Olympus OM1 that had the same facility. I found that the plain screen (minus the centre "range-finding spot), as on the old russian Zenith E was the best for my purposes. That was however what suited me, as said many people try different screens only to find that the one that came with the camera is best for them, no coincidence, just that the manufacturer will have find that most customers prefer that option.
Perhaps the best thing to do if possible would be to try someone's camera that is fitted with the screen that you think might be better for you, but don't be surprised if the original screen turns out to be best for you after all. I have spent much money over the years only to finish up a sadder and wiser person.

| | | Re: Focus screens I doubt that Olympus focusing screens will fit Canon cameras. I also used to use OM 1's and OM 2n's, and had the etched grid screen installed in both. The good thing about them was that the lines were not too intrusive in the image area, unlike my Nikon DSLR which has an on-demand grid available, but is a touch too heavy for my taste.
One thing I do miss about the Olympus cameras is the superb viewfinder: large, or what?

| | | Re: Focus screens Thanks SW, DW and HW, thanks for your feedbacks, been back on Canon site and have them there but all are just described as "helpful with manual focusing", if this is the case then i will stay with what iv got and save my pennies as i do very little manual work.
Thanks
Bev

Just ask yourself "will it improve my images?".
Or, "do I want it, or do I need it."

| | | Re: Focus screens This is what i am trying to find out HW, with the screens that Canon are offering and without a detailed description on any of them, i am none the wiser to knowing if they will improve my images, no i proberly would'nt need one and i wont go wasting money on products that i know nothing about, but this is so annoying when manufacturers expect their customers to know details about their products, like yesterday i tried phoning Canon help centre, Ha! i couldnt even understand the chap on the other end! he put me through to about 4 different extensions before i finally gave up, so i think the mystery of the focus screens is going to stay with me for the forseeable future!
