| | | Canon 40D settings. I have a Sigma 150-500mm lens fitted to a Canon 40D, what are the best camera settings for the camera so i can get the best out of this lens.
Many thanks Colin. |

| | | Re: Canon 40D settings. Hello Colin I use the 170-500 mm Sigma on the Canon400D and find I get the best results at f8 and always stay short of the full zoom never going out to the full 500mm ,I shoot mainly on AV and in the Raw format hope this helps

| | | Re: Canon 40D settings. If you search through some older posts in the Equipment Forum there is a lot of advice about that lens.
I agree with what Bill said and would add: best in the F8 to F11 range. I have actually found little, if any, quality drop of with my lens at full 500 mm which pleasantly surprised me.
But the main items to consider are: Although the OS does a good job when handheld, I prefer to use a strong tripod at 500 mm; switch off OS when using a tripod. Keep a decent shutter speed even when using a tripod. If possible, I like to have at least 1/250 or use cable release.
I don't like using the auto shooting burst setting as I find it tends to give me sharpness problems due to shutter bounce.
Obviously, try to keep the ISO as low as possible but I would prefer to risk a bit of noise in the shadows instead of having too low a shutter speed.
And that is about all there is to worry about. I find that lens and camera combination to be well balanced. I have even added a 25mm extension tube and used it for 'camera shy' insects. |
