I think I've cracked it at last. Rather than trying to get closer to your subject, the obvious answer is to choose a bigger subject. 
They don't come a lot bigger than this.

I assume so. I've never noticed them before today, they are obviously normally quite shy and retiring. |

You would have to use a wide angle, not a big telephoto lens. | | | |
