| | | Critique please Hi all,
Spent last week on Exmoor. Took this shot at Watersmeet but got so many like it that I'm losing focus on what works and what doesnt.
Would anyone mind giving some constructive criticism please?
many thanks

| | | Re: Critique please Personally I like it. I may have tried to have got down a little lower so as not to have had the waterfall only slightly obscured by the twigs / leaves, but then this may not have been possible. I like the effect you have given it by slow shutter speed, the colurs are nice and rich and the sunlight sits well with me too.
Do you like it Toby?

Did you enjoy your holiday and see any deer ruts? |

However - I'd crop about 1/4 off the bottom - my eye is drawn to the bright mossy boulder instead of the waterfall.

| | | Re: Critique please I cant give a constructive critique as I am hopless with the camera. I can however, say that it is a lovely picture, I can almost smell the wood and hear the water. Well done I say |

| | | Re: Critique please Its a very nice image Toby.
Well lit with crisp detail and good colour saturation, I agree with Oy, I would loose the bottom 1/4 of the image using the crop tool as the green moss covered rocks are a major distraction to the overall effect of the image.
Otherwise spot-on, I'd be happy with it. |

| | | Re: Critique please Nice one Toby. It's got magic & as Garden Carpet said, you can almost smell the woods & hear the waterfall. Wish I'd taken it, but then mine would have been out of focus & all messed up. |

| | | Re: Critique please I like it toby , I'm not entirely sure about the branch in the foreground on the right hand side , i think I might have been inclined to go padling (assuming it was safe to do so) and by taking two or three steps to the left thus moving the branch in the frame so it frames the waterfall rather than slightly obscuring it. Other than that a cracking shot.

| | | Re: Critique please Hi TobyH
Got to agree with previous comments and would crop the bottom to exclude the moss covered rock, the branches either side should then have the effect of drawing the viewers eye into the centre of attention. Have got mixed feelings about shutter speeds and whether to freeze the action or go for the blurred effect to emphasis movement, the picture certainly creates a tranquil mood, I guess its all a matter of personal taste.
Whichever way you look at it, its still a nice shot.
I have a picture of swallow falls in the Wales Gallery, not claiming it as one of my best shots and was taken on the spur of the moment with a compact I had in my pocket, having left the DSLR in the Hotel. Take a look and let me know what you think, feel free to tear it to pieces, I can take it.

| | | Re: Critique please Thanks for all the comments everyone.
I'll try the suggestions and see how that goes. It was difficult to get any lower as this was in a fairly tight ravine, for this shot I was on a ledge and it was, as far as I could see, the best place for a shot. There was no more room for movement to my left. Could I have paddled? Hmm ideas for my next trip maybe Quote: |

Did you enjoy your holiday and see any deer ruts? | Hi Chunky,
I really enjoyed myself. First holiday since I got my camera so loads to see and learn, beautiful places to go around there. I'm very jealous . Ruts - no but I did see plenty of deer and also saw a stag, no photos though. I did post in the Red Deer Rut thread also about it if you find it.
Gerry - thats a lovely shot also, a real feeling of power coming from the water, bet the noise was something else. Guessing it's not somewhere you'd want to slip in.
