| | | TCON 17lens Hello, a Newbie.
Been taking photos of birds landscapes with my Fuji FinePix S5000 Digital, which has
10x optical lens and 4x digital zoom which when used combined gives 22x zoom, had good
results with this set , But now I want to add a telphoto lens and I do not understand the terminology i.e 1.7. Can someone explain in simple terms if I bought this lens what difference in magnification or or zoom would it make to my camera.
Sorry if I am coming over a bit dim but I but I have only used point and shoot cameras before

| | | Re: TCON 17lens Firstly welcome to WAB!
It simply multiplies your existing range by 1.7. So your 22x will become 37.4X, however I'd forget the digital zoom, it means nothing. Effectively you'd end up with an optical 17X.
This can mean different ranges for different cameras. It depends on the starting point.Your camera starts at 37 -370mm. Hence the 10x with the 1.7, it would be 35mm equivalent 629mm. (370mm x 1.7) Making a pretty decent telephoto lens. How it would perform I've no idea! |

That clarifies what it does. from the reading on the fine pix s5000 portal
everyone seems to be advocating it, guess its a take the plunge or not.
cost seems to be around £70.
Cheers

| | | Re: TCON 17lens Laffinorse, I can recommend the TCON 17. I have one and use it with an Olympus C-765UZ. It produces a 35mm equivalent of 38*108*1.7 = 646mm. Although I now mainly use a DSLR I have a number of images on WAB where the TCON 17 has been used.
Hope you enjoy being a member of WAB.
All the best.

John D | Note- the correction -- the above should include and read '38*10*1.7= 646mm'

Matt | Thanks for the replies, and the simple explanations, As now retired I need a hobby,
decided to use the camera more, Probably go for the TCON17, Allthough camera only 3.1 million pixels I will learn more about photography and probably get better one later.
One last thing will I need an adapter ring to fit the lens.
Thanks once again such a relief to find a forum without all the Techie stuff which a novice
like me would not understand

I don't know if it will fit your camera without an adaptor, sorry. The TCON has a 55mm thread so maybe you know the thread size of your camera.

| | | Re: TCON 17lens Don't worry about only have a camera with 3.1 Mpixels. You can print to A4 easily at that resolution.
One place that does just about every possible adaptor and at very reasonable prices is: Vintage Cameras Ltd. |

| | | Re: TCON 17lens Like Matt, I have Panasonic FZ30 and I have recently bought the tcon 17. It certainly makes a difference even for a tyro like me.
I did carry out quite a lot of research and you might find this link helpful if you have not already checked it out. The researcher's first choice would, I seem to remember, have a been a Nikon and the tcon 17 second overall. I ruled out the Nikon as it weighed and cost about three times as much as the tcon17.

(if not exact, that should get you to the main site)
