| | | Narrowboats and Smoke I walked from Watford to Rickmansworth along the Grand Union Canal on Sunday. As I walked under Cassio Bridge, the sight of 3 narrowboats firing up their stoves presented a striking sight. It was against the light, but the bridge offered shade for the camera.

| | | Re: Narrowboats and Smoke Lovely shot Jim. There has been a resurgence of canal boats up my way with the cleaning of the Forth & Clyde canal. A lovely sight.

| | | Re: Narrowboats and Smoke yes gorgeous, My boyfriend's Dad has recently retired to a wide berth narrowboat and its gorgeous, all nicely kitted out inside and so peaceful, no sounds of cars, just of water and birds. Swans and kingfishers in your garden minnows and fish fry by your toes, clouds of damsels and a hobby overhead gentle rocking to send you to sleep.
I am very envious! |

| | | Re: Narrowboats and Smoke Ah, that brings back some memories. It might look a romantic lifestyle but I can assure you it's not. Carrying bags of coal and lugging gas bottles down the towpath, chopping wood, filling the water tank, running the boat engine to charge the batteries for the 12 volt lighting. Condensation was a big problem too.
I don't have any regrets, I lived on my boat for ten years and thoroughly enjoyed it. I wouldn't swap my house for another boat now though!

I'm not sure why but for some reason I thought you were based in Scotland.
