| | | Re: Focal point opinions If you'd made more of the sculpture it would be good as a focal point, but as it is, it just looks like a bit of wood got in the way of your shot of the hall. The background is more interesting but again, the OOF sculpture is not easily identifable and detracts from the viewer's understanding of the image.
Also, I'd try and keep the verticals vertical, unless there is a good artistic reason not to |

| | | Re: Focal point opinions tWITCH, which one do you like best? You sound like you favour some points from both photos which seems to be an issue I have. It does seem a waste not to have made more of the sculpture though. I think you are going to have to get your belly on the ground as other users have said. If you REALLY want that shot, you have to be prepaired to shoot it from where it looks best. I have been under hay bales, in rivers, laying on the floor in the main arena of a country show etc just to get the image as I want it..... just be aware that people do look at you strangely....... having said that, people always look at me strangely so it could just be me. Did you notice the medlar tree near the entrance where you pay? They're an interesting and unusual tree.

LOL | My favourite, I'd have to say the first. I've seen Hardwick Hall many times, but it's the first time I have come across the carving. However as a photo for all, the second one cropped is much better.
I can see a muddy ending to my next visit.
I don't have a problem with 'getting down and dirty' , after getting the shot I wanted of a cross in Whitby churchyard I was filthy. I had to lie flat on my back at the base of the cross just to fit it all into the frame.
As for odd looks K9photo, I don't mind that at all. Angles are everything; I just wish I'd thought more about this photo as a photo and not just a record of my day out.
I will keep an eye out for the Medlar tree, as we didn't come in the main entrance. We got to Hardwick via the Rowthorne trail; off Teversal trail.
Thanks again everyone, your comments are very helpful.
