I notice the bait is on the shady side of the tree, try moving it round to the other side so the bird is in the light. Also try shooting on a cloudy day when the light is less harsh.A GSW will quickly get used to you and a baited situation so should keep coming back giving you chances to get it in the right light.

Sometimes conditions are such that you can’t get a perfect shot, black and white birds in bright light is a classic example. I think that you have done well under the circumstances.
Now that you have a bird coming into camera range I’d suggest you work the opportunity frequently. By putting the time in you will undoubtedly get the chance to take a picture in light that is less harsh, allowing you to retain detail in both the dark and light parts of this bird. If you do, it won’t be long before you have pictures that will make these first shots (as nice as they are), seem only average.
