| | | Re: Have I done something wrong here? you could blow the image up to 400% then very carefully use the healing brush or clone stamp tool (set to 1 or 2 pix radius) to erase the fringing on a jpeg - however this will take a very long time and is only worth it on exceptional images.

This (and the others I took) are okay, but no more than that. I'd also have only considered doing that if I needed to do something with them. As well as that, my PS3 skills aren't too good either !

I might have a go tonight - Cheers!

Hi folks - sorry to resurrect this post again, but thought you might like an update.
I took into account (and made note of) all your tips and advice, and had a good look at the Chris Weston video featured on the Photo Answers website (John D posted a thread about this video on 7th April). I took myself off to Weyhill yesterday to have a bit of a practice at my birds in flight photography.
Well - I think I'm beginning to get there . Still need lots of practice though, but see what you think:
This is one of a wild Red Kite - it was quite a way off, but a better effort than the buzzard I posted in the initial thread
This one is a shot of Peregrine Falcon 'Lark' flying over the meadow (which was full of cowslips coming into bloom) - a little out of focus unfortunately but these lovely birds don't half move!!
This is a shot of Tawny Eagle Frodo catching a mid-air snack
And finally a Black Kite - I think this one came out best of the bunch and is probably my favourite shot so far
Thank you one and all for all your help and advice - you've all been really helpful. The rest, as they say, is now up to me!

I find birds in flight very difficult to capture, it takes real skill, that's why I don't have any good birds in flight pics!
I'd say you have the aptitude and determination to develop the ability further.
I'm still envious of your E3 too.

Dave | Thanks Dave - now I'm getting some reasonable results with the E3 (I've been 'picture of the week' on the Weyhill Hawk Conservancy Trust's website a few times now with my portrait work ) I'm really beginning to warm to it, and think we can really work well together, especially with the Bigma. I did wonder if I had done the right thing at first, and do have a couple of niggles with it (which I won't elaborate on here), it proved it's worth yesterday for being waterproof - the weather was awful!
