| | | Butterfly house Went to the one in lancaster last year and tried to take some pics but the DSLR kept steaming up so i quickly put it back in the bag and used the old point and shoot which resulted in only a couple of shots not being blurred, any advice? or is it not possible due to the heat in these places? |

| | | Re: Butterfly house Hi mate, You will have to spend a good while in the warm atmosphere to allow your camera to warm up to the temperature in the house, best to keep it in the case during this time, once it has warmed up sufficiently it should be OK, but be patient, it could take a hour or more, you could use the time to look for the best viewpoints for your pictures. Good luck, Keith

| | | Re: Butterfly house Hi Keith,
before you go into the butterfly house put the camera , and flash if you use one, into a plastic bag and tie the top , or use a cable tie etc. The condensation will then form on the outside of the bag until the camera has reached the same temperature as the house.
The only problem after this is the sweat from your brow - could always wear a bandana I suppose ?

| | | Re: Butterfly house I work at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh and often find this a problem. Moving from one glasshouse to another in winter after you have been shooting outside often leads to steamed up cameras. Using a waterproof case/bag like a Peli or Lowepro Dryzone (which I've never regretted buying, it's the business for the outdoor photographer who get regularly drenched) is handy because you don't open it and leave it for 20-30 mins to acclimatise. Then when you open it the inside has by this time warmed up. I do regularly have to put my cameras in the oven to dry them out as they can jam if there is moisture forming on the inside of the body. The plastic bag trick does work but its far from brilliant. I have frozen a few cameras in my time and that can be really fun but. |

| | | Re: Butterfly house Hi,
I went to the same Butterfly House in Lancaster just before Christmas and didn't have any problems with my DSLR
I'll try and dig out a few shots when I get opportunity to get on my PC that has all my pics on (out and about on laptop for next few days).
I didn't do anything different to it at all. It was a cold, miserable day and of course was very warm in the main butterfly section. I went in and out (there's an open air aviary section) without any problems. I do carry my camera in a pretty well-insulated LowePro backpack so that may have helped but the camera was out of it for the time I was there.
Sounds like I just got lucky! Advice provided so far seems pretty good though. Good luck |
