| | | Eos 450d I see Canon launched the new EOS 450D yesterday and very attractive it looks:-
12.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor
Canon EOS Integrated Cleaning System
3.5 frames per second
3-inch LCD with Live View shooting
9-point wide-area AF system with f/2.8 cross-type centre point
Picture Style image processing parameters
DIGIC III image processor
Makes deciding on whether to upgrade or not a bit of a nightmare given the pace that technology is advancing at and the frequency of new models being launched. I was contemplating upgrading my 30D in favour of the 40D, seems if I sacrificed the build quality and went for the 450D I would save circa £200 and get much the same in terms of image quality and functionality. On the other hand do I wait until the Autumn launch and see if they bring out a 50D 15 mega pixel to replace the 40D?
Gerry
p.s. Anyone placed a pre-order yet for the EF 800mm f5.6L IS USM ? At £9,000 you could buy a good car! |

| | | Re: Eos 450d The thing is Gerry, we, and our pockets will not be able to keep up with technology. There will always be another camera bigger and better, faster and clearer ready to take pride of place. If you look at the cameras produced over the last twelve months alone, and there is too many to list here, you will see that they differ in features but not by a lot. As you point out, some have a better build but slower fps. Some work well at high ISO but don't have live view. It is only when you get to a 1D Mark 3 that you begin to get all the features, but at a full feature price. My opinion is that all leading camera brands are trying to swamp the market with many near variations of one camera in order to steal customers from another maker and therefore take the market share of that market

It's called MARKETING! And it results in the sale of cameras and the likes.

John D | Totally agree, but as a customer, are you actually getting anything different. Personally I don't think marketing is a bad thing. It gives us the opportunity to choose a camera that, more or less, precisely fits our needs. I think though that the consumer needs to be a little careful that he dosn't feel that he has to upgrade his camera every year to keep up with the latest model without using every facility on the one he already has. . . My spare camera is a 20D and I'm still finding out things about it I didn't know although I have had it for two years. . . I hate to think how long it will take to master my main camera

| | | Re: Eos 450d Personally, I don't think it's enough of an upgrade to go from the 400D I own to the 450D. There's nothing in it that's significantly better - spot metering is nice, but it's still less of a 'spot' than the 40D (I think) and unless you do a lot of macro\manual focussing work, the live view is pretty unecessary.
As far as an upgrade goes, going to the 40d makes a lot more sense to me, and if you want to save money, just get a 400d now the prices will start to fall.
Just my 2p
