SteveHL | Steve's point is spot on. The lenses are by far the most important part of any photography kit.
All the main manufactures make cameras that are capable tools and 90% of the added features many of them have you'll hardly ever, if ever, use. |

| | | Re: Pentax K10D I don't know a great deal about photography either, but have just bought myself the Samsung GX10 which is a re-badged Pentax 10D and can be bought at the moment cheaper than the Pentax and with a 2 lens kit. Finding lenses for Pentax cameras appears to be more difficult than for Canon and Nikon though both new and secondhand.

| | | Re: Pentax K10D I have a K10D which I am very happy with and although Pentax do not have any long zoom lenses, Sigma and Tamron do make lenses to fit ie Sigma 50-500 and Tamron 200-500.The good thing is that because the camera has Anti-shake then all lenses fitted will incorporate Anti-shake unlike Canon for instance where you have to buy their IS lenses which are expensive.I am still learning the camera but I am enjoying the experience.

| | | Re: Pentax K10D I would find a camera shop that has all the models that end up on your short list and pay a visit. You may find that some models just feel awkward and the dials etc do not come easily to hand. Once you get used to the camera if it fits your hand you should be comfortably able to change settings without looking at the dials.

| | | Re: Pentax K10D I go along with SteveHL. Try before you buy. I spent many hours pondering which DSLR to buy many moons ago and I settled for a Nikon. When I went to try it, it did not feel right in my hand. I ended up walking away with a Canon EOS 20D and never looked back. I bought several lenses for it and when I upgraded to the Canon EOS 1D MK3 they all fitted that too. Fantastic.
This is just a personal choice but as I said, try before you buy.

| | | Re: Pentax K10D I agree with the comments above dont be put of the pentax but think carefully about the readily availability of lens for it over the Canon 400D,I did not think when I purchased the Nikon D40 on the availability of lens for it and I am now in the the process of sweet talking the other half to let me get either the the Canon 400D or 40D due to the wider availability of the different lens its up to you but think hard about how you wish to go and type of photography you invisage doing in the future ny Nikon is only 8 months old and the other half is doing her nut because I am going to change to the Canon system

It's a mistake to think that Nikon are limited for lens choice, as there are around 40 optics to choose from at the moment. The D40 will only accept G or D type lenses, which, as you say, limits the range. Upgrading to a D80 will allow the use of a considerable number of Nikkor lenses. Upgrade further still (D200), and you can use lenses that date back to 1977. The really good thing about the Nikon system, is that it has used the same lens (F) mount since 1959. Canon have changed their lens mount at least twice (to my knowledge).
Just something you may want to consider, if you already have lenses with the Nikon bayonet fitting.

Don't forget third party suppliers. Sigma lenses, which I use, are available for both Canon and Nikon. I'd think long and hard before swapping. I'm not sure which lens you think is missing from the Nikon range, I'd be very surprised if no similar alternative was available. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
