| | | Editing - camera or computer Hello all, I have a general question,
I have recently downloaded photoscape, simple to use and basic (suits me perfectly), main use for me is cropping, though I do sometimes experiment with other functions.
I note on other threads that are some preferences for editing in camera, is there an advantage/disadvantage either way? |

Jim | That sums up the main advantage!
You also have far more control over what you do on a PC - I can crop photos on my camera but only to a few pre set sizes. I really can't understand why anyone would choose to do any sort of processing "in camera" after the shot has been taken unless they had no other option.

| | | Re: Editing - camera or computer I agree with Jim and Roy.
Editing on the computer with selected software is the way to go.
There are several FREE versions of software available and others around the £60/70 range that will do all that is necessary for most people.
Editing on the camera alone is so limited as it really is a non-starter.

| | | Re: Editing - camera or computer I use 2 free programes. Phoxo and the most use is Irfanview for resizing and can make mirror images with Irfanview...Mainly because camera is a Vivitar--ViviCam Digital camera Small but practical for my use.

| | | Re: Editing - camera or computer In computer every time. No need to pay either there are superb packages as good as anything on the market for free.
I switched last year to the GIMP it's free and it does everything I could want. Like Photoshop it is complex but I bought a book Klaus Goelker - "Gimp 2.6 for photographers" and worked my way through it over the course of 3 weeks. |

| | | Re: Editing - camera or computer I agree with the views here - the range of features on computer software is far greater than in camera and there is a lot of very good free stuff available.
I find the combination of Photoscape and GIMP covers virtually everything I need for photo editing. Photoscape if I want something simple(eg I think cropping and resizing are easier in Photoscape than in GIMP); GIMP for the more complex stuff.
Though I did buy one piece of photo software - Photomatix, but that not for editing.

| | | Re: Editing - camera or computer shooting in raw i leave all settings at neutral in- camera sharpening is best left off too ,it does all depend if you are shooting raw and what make of camera you are using I swear by dpp for canon some say its equal to photoshop for the quality of raw editing as all the filters and wot not are tailored specifically for canon
but there are excellent free-ware alternatives out there check gizmo's freeware reviews an excellent and trusted site with safe downloads
it really is a mine of information for all types of free ware along with great articles to make your computing a breeze without the hangups
photo scape is highly acclaimed with hidden depths
paint.net is always improving ,a simplified photoshop that includes layers and fun to use
there is still a old freeware version of helicon filter 5 about a smart bit of software with raw support and a simple to follow work-flow with very good noise reduction and sharpening
that shows a wire frame of your image to indicate exactly where the filters are applied and to what density so you can work on a image blown right up and be very precise
so we are really spoilt for choice for free ware editors the only downside is that some editors have excellent tools equal to photoshop but lacking some features you would expect so you may need a couple of programs to make the most of free editing
