| | | Speeding up an ageing Computer Just put a 120GB SSD - Solid State Drive - in my machine. Basically that is a 120GB SD or Compact flash card.
Disc access is so fast that photoshop loads in about 5 seconds, and reviewing photos is a doddle. Keeping photos awaiting editing on this drive.
Unbelievable.
Its is the biggest jump in performance on upgrading, even to new machines, that I hae seen in my 23 years of computing.
(Techie son help!)
Happy Christmas friends. |

Byte for byte they are not cheap - SSDs and wifes. |

| | | Re: Speeding up an ageing Computer too true - but i dont need a drive that size, a small 40 or 80GB SSD would be enough because i have all my files on external drives - it just needs to be big enough to hold the operating system , office, photoshop elements, page plus, webplus and , a slideshow maker

| | | Re: Speeding up an ageing Computer Glad you like that ssd drive Hobjob...I shall buy one when the price drops to a far lower level than the rip off prices are now. So when the level drops to the same as normal hdd I shall buy one. I can wait until then seeing as I already got 8 x 1TB hdd.
Take Care. |

| | | Re: Speeding up an ageing Computer Well you don't even need to tell Sarah then
I'm keeping my current unsorted photos on the SSD too - access is blindingly fast for editing. Quote:

| | | Re: Speeding up an ageing Computer all you need now is another ssd for a scratch/auxiliary drive and your cooking on gas
there is an alternative drive which is basically a hybrid of the 2 technologies it combines ssd and conventional hdd in one box
a review here Seagate Now Shipping 2nd-Gen Solid State Hybrid Drive
i upgraded my pc last january and decided on ssd for the main boot drive since then i have purchased another ssd ( both 120 gig ) to use as a scratch/auxiliary drive for photoshop and video rendering and it doe make quite a difference
the new hybrid drives look quite interesting i'm gonna have to have a closer look at those |

| | | Re: Speeding up an ageing Computer My ageing desktop PC has just died (hardware) and I've had to go to using my higher specced Win7 laptop for regular and general use until I can afford a re-build of the desktop machine.
After labouring with the laptop for a few weeks, I now realise that the best performance upgrade I ever installed on to my desktop machine was Linux
