Advice on watermark needed

I have an image which needs to have transparent background so that I can lay it over other images like a watermark.

Don't know where to begin. Can anyone advise please?

There are a number of ways to do this, Andrew, and most are a little complicated.

Can we see the overall image before giving any firm advice? And what software are you using.

Whichever method is used it will need some form of extraction or deletion of unwanted areas, possibly with an erasure brush.

Then you will need to work in a format which supports transparency. Some software can do this with Tiff, otherwise you may need PNG although PSD would work if you have a Photoshop programme.

The finished extracted article will then need to be pasted as a layer.

There are programs out there that will do this for you. Alas I have forgoten the name of the one I use to use. Don't do that anymore.
Google is your friend.
Photoshop will also do it for you and give you transparansy if you need it. Again, google on how to do it.
Clever people will still nick your image and take out the tranparansy if they want to.
