| | | Problem transferring images to PS Elements Hi, I seem to have a recurring problem when I download images from my CF card (used on a Canon 5D) to PSE. I get the large JPG image that the camera is set to plus one and often two further low res images. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Is it likely to be a setting in camera (although when I review the CF card in camera it only shows one image) a problem with the CF card or a PSE settings.
Any advice very gratefully received!
Many thanks

| | | Re: Problem transferring images to PS Elements This is a guess as I don't know the 5D or PSE.
It could be a camera setting that is the cause, but I'd be surprised. Making lower resolution versions in the camera will use up storage space and they can be made easily using photo editors. You also say that the card contains only one image per photo.
I suspect a setting in PSE may be creating the lower resolution versions, though I can't explain why sometimes get one and sometimes two different additional versions.
I'm sure others with more knowledge will be along soon.

FMF | I have a setting on my 450D that allows me to take one shot, but it gives me 2 images (one in RAW and the other in Large JPEG). Maybe you have something similar set?

| | | Re: Problem transferring images to PS Elements The version of Elements that you are using may be relevant - but you haven't said what version that is?
As a workaround, why not just import the photos from your camera directly (drag & drop from the camera's memory card) to folder(s) created on the hard drive.
Then you can select and import the photos required from those folders into Elements by using the "Get Photos And Videos > From Files And Folders command".
(In order to do that, and depending on how you installed Elements, you may need to disable the "Adobe Photo Downloader" if it automatically starts up whenever you connect the camera/camera memory card to the computer).
Regards,
Mike. |

| | | Re: Problem transferring images to PS Elements I've started using Elements 9 to import, letting it set up new folders by date within my chosen project folder, & put my name in the EXIF data, because it seemed the easiest way of doing both. What I've noticed is that it sets up 3 files, RAW, JPEG ('cos that's what I've set the camera - Nikon D5000 - to record) & a little, 4 KB or so, XMP file for each shot. Double clicking on the XMP file brings up the working area of Elements, but with nothing loaded on it, & opening the file with Notepad shows the EXIF data. I've no idea why, but it doesn't seem to be a problem so I've ignored it - but your query has made me curious! The XMP files don't seem to be needed - if the image files are moved to a different folder they stand alone, the EXIF data is still on them, as it should be. |

| The XMP files hold the parameters for raw conversion. If you edit the raw file in Camera Raw or Elements, the raw file is not changed but all your edits are saved in the XMP file, along with the exif data, although this is still included in raw file. When you re-open the raw file in any Adobe program your edits are remembered by the program reading the XMP file (if it's available). If you haven't edited the raw file the XMP file will just contain the Exif data.

Brian | Thank you - that clarifies things! The XMP files haven't been produced when I've used the Nikon transfer software, or when I've copied & pasted direct from the card. I've only been using the JPEGS as I haven't graduated to using the RAW files yet (a task for over the winter ), so hadn't realised - I've just tried it out & yes, an XMP file is manufactured if I open a direct-copied RAW file. It's good to learn something! Maybe this is what the original poster is seeing? Tho' they were talking about low res images? |

| | | Re: Problem transferring images to PS Elements I open a blank folder and copy all my files from CF card to that folder. I then date it thus..2011-11-15 Wetlands...etc.
I then op[en photoshop (elements if you got that) then drag n drop to the blank space in photoshop. Image opens in CRAW imediatly. It can't be simpler than that.
I hat xmp files so I unticked my box and never see them again. You can still put your raw file back to the default any time you like and start again. |

| | | Re: Problem transferring images to PS Elements Do you have the Canon EOS Utilities programme, FMF?
That one always seems to work for me. I have tried downloading using Bridge (CS5) as direct downloads from my camera and also using a card reader.
Everytime I try this method I struggle to understand what is happening and get a copy of every image saved in a different location to my intended sub folder.
Apparently, this is an automatic action but it can be turned of by clicking somewhere in the Preferences Menu. However, I just returned to using the EOS Utility which works just as well.
ps. I'm shooting Raw.
