optimum print size

I am thinking of getting a few of my best photos printed and framed.
I am not really sure what the best size to go for is. The image files i have should allow a very large size without grain. I always seem to prefer larger wildlife prints when i have seen the wildlife photography displays at museums.The small 8x10 prints dont really interest me.
What do you think is the best size to go for ? I am not worried about cost of framing etc as it will be only a few for my own keep sake.Also as i have never had any printed before ,what is the best place to get this done ? .
Any advice appreciated.

As always a question before an answer. What do you intend to do with these pictures?? where do you intend to display them?? at home in a Gallery or public place??
I should say the size criteria depends on the answers to these questions. For example a 90x90 picture would possibly fill the whole wall in most houses although technically very achievable.
I would suggest going for the biggest dependant on how many prints there are and the space available. Or possibly smaller sizes and a greater number on display.

I've had nice results from Photobox and Flikr, but only at A4 size.

Above that size, my daughter who is a professional photographer, tends to go for canvas printing. She has one that is about 1m x 1.5m - truly stunning.

I too would go for a couple of selected canvas prints.

At the larger sizes where canvas prints come into their own, I think they look much better than traditionally framed glossy or matt "standard" prints.

As for the original question of Optimum size - well that's got to be very much a personal opinion that needs to take into account the intended setting for the print, along with the likely viewing distance.

Canvas prints have been mentioned, but don't go for the usual standard canvas prints, or canvas-effect. Go for dye sublimated prints. Unlike inkjet-based canvas prints dye sublimated prints will not fade. The dye penetrates deep into the fabric, as opposed to being printed upon - you can even take them off the frames and put them in the washing machine. I ordered three to give them a try and I am absolutely delighted with the quality and presentation - top quality canvas on top quality frames with little wedges built in should you need to re-tighten the canvas.
With the firm I used (link below) you simply upload your images, and provided your order is in by 2pm, they'll be despatched that same day. Can't recommend them highly enough, and I'll be getting some more done soon.

For straight prints my standard size for on the wall at home is 16x12" - mounted and framed at 20x16"
