| | | Viewing .tif files in canon programme I have some photos saved as tif files which were taken in the past, most are saved as jpegs. they were saved in the tif format after being taken as raw files & converted in canon digital photo professional. The programme seems to have the ability to save as TIF but not to edit or show them?
I can view them in paint & windows picture viewer no problem and have opened them in photoshop elements before, but if i try to re open them in the canon programme or canon zoom browser they just appear as a blank box with the file name and a cross in it. I've just up got a new pc & this is the only editing software on at present. I can't see any options in the controls to do with file types. however it does say in the manual that TIF is supported.

| | | Re: Viewing .tif files in canon programme All my 8bit .tifs are viewable in DPP, so I am at a loss other than to suggest right-clicking the blank box and seeing what info (if any) comes up. You could try searching on the unofficial Canon photography website Canon Digital Photography Forums - Powered by vBulletin for an answer - unless someone else here can help...

| | | Re: Viewing .tif files in canon programme I do the same as you, Rich, and likewise DPP won't recognise the converted files.
Shoot Raw + small fine Jpeg, edit with Raw Therapee (a bit difficult and unstable to use but I find it gives the best results of the free converters) save as 16 bit Tiff.
Most of the Exif information is also lost during the conversion process.
The converted images open and edit OK with my final edit software (Serif Photo Plus X3) and are easily viewable with ACDSee.
There is, apparently, a new updated version of DPP which I haven't tried. |

| | | Re: Viewing .tif files in canon programme Rich : you might want to check that your .tiffs don`t have any selections/masks saved with them. With Photoshop (and probably Elements, too) look in Channels. Delete any selections shown there and save. I experimented (I use Corel PhotoPaint) by creating a mask and saving the .tiff. When I tried to open the image in DPP, the thumbnail wouldn`t display just as you describe.

| | | Re: Viewing .tif files in canon programme I have just done a few tests with my DPP, Rich, and nothing will show.
I tried converting to 8 bit Tiff and creating a tiff from images which were shot in Jpeg but all I get is that cross over the image thumbnail.
Looking at the DPP Help files, under Supported Formats it says that Exif compatibile Tiff images are acceptable, but there are many versions of Tiff and those from my converter and from my editing software obviously aren't on the required list.
All Exif certainly gets removed when I create a Tiff.
ps. They are straightforward Tiff images without any extra additions etc.

Have you tried the Canon ZoomBrowser that was on the cd as well? I seem to remeber this had some editing tools and was compatible with different file types.

| | | Re: Viewing .tif files in canon programme Sorry I am a bit late replying I've not been on for a while. it is Zoombrowswer that won't display them, and some were converted and saved using canons digi' photo professional as I have not had access to my usual software recently. the other couple were done on whatever I used in 2003, but I noticed they have a vignette frame round the edge. however it will display some other TIFF files, only certain ones are affected, so this suggests it may be the way they have been manipulated as Trik has mentioned.
I just set up a new computer and have photoshop elements 7 installed and this also opens the offending files OK , so I just saved jpeg copies of the half dozen problem ones as well. |

| | | Re: Viewing .tif files in canon programme The vignette would have been applied with the use of a mask selection. As a troubleshooting exercise, if you still have the .tiffs, open them in PS7, go to Channels and see if there is a black and white thumbnail showing. If there is, that will be the mask selection. Try deleting it and saving, then see if they will view OK in Zoombrowser.
