The Scarab Raw Converter might also be worth a look
Scarab Darkroom
I have tried it but found that it was too basic for me.
To my way of thinking, if you are going to all the trouble of shooting Raw, you need a rather advanced converter to receive all of the benefits. Otherwise you might as well stick with the simpler Jpeg.
Unfortunately, although not surprisingly, most of the advanced converters are somewhat on the expensive side.
I use Raw Therapee version 3, which I consider to be the best of the free converters. But it is a rather unstable programme which isn't for the faint hearted; although once 'tamed' it can produce good work.
Each camera manufacturer does indeed have it's own version of Raw, and even that can vary between different models; although most of the better converters can cope with most of the widely available Raw alternatives.
But at least there are some universal photo formats to use after conversion, like Jpeg, Tiff, Png, etc. Things tend to be much worse with text editing software where there is no compatibility between different software. Except for PDF possibly, but even that can be difficult to use with some programmes.
