| | | Re: Photo editing You can try Lightroom for free at the moment by downloading the Lightroom 3 beta from Adobe. If you decide to keep it when the product is announced, you'll have to pay.
If you want a free solution, try the combination of Picasa and Gimp.

| | | Re: Photo editing any editing program with good functions can be confusing. The GIMP isn't particularly user friendly, but there are many tutorials and guides, and it'll deliver more flexibility than a lot of other free programs.
Once you know how to make basic level/curves/saturation adjustments and can use unsharp mask, it's as easy to use as any program, but has more things to offer when you wan't to use them .
There are also tons of free plugins and scripts for the GIMP. |

| | | Re: Photo editing Gimpshop has a nicer layout.
I've found it a bit more temperamental than plain gimp though, tends to crash on me more.
But then i'm running vista, so everything crashes every once in a while |

| | | Re: Photo editing I've used both Gimp and CS4 and Squishy I don't think your missing out on much
I actually find Photoshop more user friendly because there is a lot more guides and tutorials out there. But I also find it incredibly slow. GIMP and CS4 have the same(ish) tools, filters, menus etc. But then again I haven't really mastered either so I'm not getting the best out of them. At my stage of editing (newbie) I don't see much of a difference between them, apart from GIMP being free and Photoshop being slow.
