Another way to improve picture definition. Is not to increase the overall sharpness. But actually to decrease the unsharpness. Sounds illogical. But it works.
The favoured method used by many well published photographers, is, using Photoshop, to draw a lasso line around your main subject. Then select 'Unsharp mask' Set the three sliders in descending order to 100% - 1.2 - 1 (an ideal default setting). This will only affect your main subject.
Then, in the Select menu. Click on inverse This will switch all actions to your picture background. Select Gaussian Blur and adjust to just slightly soften the B/G.
