LCD monitor for photo editing

Dear all

I've been searching fruitlessly for information on good LCD monitors for photo editing under £400. My preference would be for a 22" or 24" screen.

I'm aware that different screen technologies exist and that some people advise against TN but, being realistic with my budget, does anyone have any firm recommendations? I would want the screen to calibrate well (using a GM Eye-One Display 2).

The only good monitors I know of are almost twice your budget,
Look at the LA CIE 320 £686 20",or the NEC Multisynch LCD2070NX
at £300 20"
The Viewsonic VX2435WM £455 24"
These get good reviews from people using Lightroom but they just accept the screens performance and do not use calibration equipment as they double as topflight games machines

As Nightshade has already said I think you will struggle to find a good monitor for photo editing on your budget. Another one for the list would be the Eizo S2111W Monitor TFT Monitor at £500.

I got a really good one recently. HP w2207h 22 inch, glossy screen. Really pleased with it. I'm sure it was under your budget by quite some way... I use it for editing video and with photos in photophop. Really clear and bright. I used to work as a graphics designer in a print shop... so I'm used to good screens and I can't complain with this one.. Take a look next time you are in Comet or PC World. Then buy it elsewhere!

Recently purchased an iiyama 20ins H511S from Afterhours Computers (on the internet) for £344. I searched around and this was the best value with sRGB colour option. So far I'm pleased with it. Colours appear correct without calibration and the screen isn't too glarey.

Which ever one you decide on it's worth looking at your existing graphics card.

I have asked the same question of a friend of mine who is a pro. In short there is no good monitor for the budget you are talking about.
Some of the cheaper good ones include the Dell range but you are looking at £700 plus. That is not to say there are not others, he swiftly added to ensure no bias is intended.
I am managing with a cheapo but when I look at images on a good monitor there is NO comparison. I will get a decent one before too long.
It is a painful lesson but quality costs, the same applies to lenses.

I run a BenQ FP783 17" the colours and sharpness are excellent the later (sometimes cheaper) monitors available now are even better!
Buy yourself a copy of Computer shopper when they are running monitor reviews or try a search on their website now

Like Tigger I too have a HP w2207 and I love it. I'm sure we paid just over £200 pounds for it but that was about six months ago so must be much less now. I would use the extra money to by a Spyder to calibrate the screen regularly.

I also use the HP w2207, £200 sounds about right and I have to admit it’s the best monitor I have had and its been pretty accurate on colours from digital photography to scanned in water colour paintings with out any calibration.
