Nikon D40 / Photoshop help please

Hi,

My friend just purchased a Nikon D40 (not the X version). I was showing him how to use the camera, we were shooting RAW. BUT, the NEF files will not open up in PhotoShop Elements 5.0. It says the files are damaged or the wrong type?

They open fine with the software that came with the camera though, and the thumbnail previews work fine.

Does anyone know what the heck could be wrong? Is it an in camera setting do you think? I can't fiddle with it until next week when I see him again but any ideas are most welcome.

I had a problem a little like this with my Canon gear on RAWSHOOTER, but I fixed that by buying elements lol.

Might need to update the Adobe Camera Raw, you should be able to download the latest version here.

I don't know Nikon cameras, but would ask what extension is used? Is it RAW? My old Fuji used RAF and these were not recognised by other makers software.

It is Nikon's own RAW format which they call NEF.

I came across this thread while browsing the forums, seems Irfanview can open and view .NEF files if used with the RAW plugin.....

Cheers guys, I will give it a go next week when we meet up again. Good old Irfanview, so simple yet so effective, I have used this for yonks now, never bothered with the RAW plugin though so may give that a crack myself, cheers Mark.

I use it myself Kris but wasn`t aware until reading that thread that it could be used with raw files.As my camera only shoots jpegs and Tiffs I`d not had reason to find out which other file types it worked with.
