| | Changing to Raw format - Canon 400D Is there a particular size memory card to use or will any size be ok for Raw,as I have looked how to change from jpeg before starting to take shots with an empty 1gb card but can`t find how to change.I`ll have to dig out the manual. |

| | | Re: Changing to Raw format - Canon 400D I normally use 2gb cards, any smaller and you won't fit many shots on. Any larger and you risk having 'all your eggs in one basket' should the card fail. I can fit around 200 RAW shots on a 2gb card.
To change from JPEG to RAW on the 400D simply press menu, and then scroll down to select 'Image Quality'. Press 'set' to see the various options, one of which is RAW.

Matt | May be better to choose a RAW + JPEG, then you can look at things in JPEG without conversion - and hit the delete button more quickly |

the only thing against this approach is that t will reduce the capacity of your memory card still further , and 4 +8 Gig cards aren't cheap.

As for displaying the pics on your camera once they have been written (camera playback) JPEGS are no quicker than RAW'S to display. Infact I think you will find that even if you shoot in RAW only these are converted to jpegs in Camera for playback purposes. |

| | | Re: Changing to Raw format - Canon 400D The RAW files often have jpeg content stored "embedded" to enable thumbnail viewing in windows etc. I have been told by a very reliable software delevoper that it is this jpeg file that the Microsoft Viewer displays when reviewing Nikon NEF's.
I tested this recently by using a RAW batch editor to remap a stuck pixel on all the files in a folder (166) the Microsoft Viewer still showed the hot spot but it was invisible in Adobe, Bibble and CaptureOne.
Canon's RAW may be different in this regard. |

| | | Re: Changing to Raw format - Canon 400D I have now found the info for the Canon 400D (same for most other Canon's) and If you shoot raw only, there is a med jpg embedded in it and this is what the camera uses for playback in the camera so as far as display speed is concerned there is no advantage whatsoever in shooting RAW + JPEG. It is this same embedded jpg that the Raw image viewers use to view the file before comversion. |
