| | | Shared Knowledge. The other day, I had the opportunity to take a walk with a botanist. He was in his early seventies and what he knew about flowers and plants was...well mind-blowing. He took the time to explain in depth about some of NK's local plants, their populations and habitats. I learnt more in an hour with him than I could have done trawling through many a field guide and book.
My point of this thread however, is the importance of sharing your wildlife knowledge with others.
Let's face it, there's many a person here on WAB with a wealth of information that has been accumulated over years.
Unless we write papers, books or lecture, one day that knowledge will inevitably be lost.
Therefore, I encourage you to share your knowledge- particularly with young folk who haven't had their minds cluttered with worries that come with adulthood.
Everything you know should be passed on. No-matter how insignificant you think your knowledge is, it IS significant to the up and coming wildlife enthusiasts of tomorrow.

| | | Re: Shared Knowledge. I got into trouble the last time I mentioned it but there are people arriving in this country and settling that do not have a clue about our wildlife. They kill ducks and fish to eat, because they could at home, they kill slow worms because they think they are snakes, no one has bothered to explain about our wildlife or the laws that protect it. What can we do about it?

| | | Re: Shared Knowledge. Educate their children. It's the only way and with children getting more involved with outside the classroom education, at least we'll have a fighting chance.

| | | Re: Shared Knowledge. I'm just back from a visit to Aylesbury, so many things to share with so many people, of all ages.
Looking at ladybirds under the scope with an 8 and a 12 year old brought interest from two 19 year olds....we all spent a great afternoon 'bug' hunting.
Another day, another habitat. Us looking for moss we found a 'gang' (their words) of teenagers helping us, and again finding all sorts of bugs, ants, snails etc and them wanting to look, think and ask all sorts of questions.
Last night went off looking for deer....with a trail of new found naturalists following, indeed leading the way..........fantastic stuff.
Share your knowledge folks, share your passion the next generation are sometimes just waiting for someone to show them the way.
Great thread WW

| | | Re: Shared Knowledge. I often share what wildlife knowledge I have with colleagues, family and friends. Sometimes they run and hide when they see me coming but quite often they are intrigued with the little snippets I give them. I have a 13 month old grandaughter and I can't wait to get her actively involved in wildlife watching. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
