Ken | Right next to Yorkshire? Don't say that in the Hanging Gate Ken, they'd string you up! Saddleworth is pure Yorkshire (with a Lancashire accent mind you). There has been a fun bit of argy-bargy going on on the roadsigns near Denshaw, with the Greater Manchester and Oldham (how can Saddleworth possibly identify with Oldham for heavens sake??) signs being obliterated by Yorkshire ones. Good! Greater Manchester was never a county, just an administrative region, that officially ceased to exist in 1986 with the disbanding of the G.M.C.
Regards, Chris

Reason: the hackles on my neck started to rise when the thought of Greater Manchester entered my head

Pauline | Good on you Pauline. Manchester is in Lancs anyway, it's where Lancashire cricket play. Liverpool is in Lancashire too. Merseyside indeed, I'm just not having it!
I'm so proud of Lancashire that I refuse to submit sightings to the GM Birds website on principle, because they keep trying to tell me that GM is a county (I still check it though in case owt good turns up......in Lancashire).
