It will take me a few days to trawl back through my logs to find the info but I will get back to you.

I have just had an email from Whittles publishing regarding DVDs. They say that if anyone orders a DVD, and I am going to do this, the system is to send them a written order and a cheque payable to Mike. They send the order to him and he sends the goods direct. I have replied to the email to ask if I can enclose a letter to Mike in with my order. If this is ok with them and I see no reason why not, I can send Mike my eagle information myself. If you wish, I can send you a copy as I indicated for your information but I wont have to trouble you to send it on. Let me know. The selection of DVDs, some VHS only tapes and the newer books look really interesting.
Edit - thanks for the link to the piece of video - that was great.
Tommy

| | | Re: Mike Tomkies - where is he now? Yes, that's fine. His last few books, about his life before the wilderness, are great reads. This guy has had TWO amazing lives! Maybe that's the secret to still being so wide-awake at his age? Or is it because he never married?
By the way, if you can track down his old biographies on people, like the John Wayne for instance, they are great. I think it's just called Duke, full of stuff I'd never read about him. |

| | | Re: Mike Tomkies - where is he now? Thank you to everyone who has posted here. It was this thread (via Google) that led me to WAB when I was looking for info on Mike. 'A Last Wild Place' was my first MT book and got me hooked. I'm gradually adding to my collection and savouring each book as it arrives from Amazon. It was great to see some of his wildlife footage on DVD which I ordered from his publisher. What a great guy! |

I bought my first Mike Tomkies book in 1981, between Earth and Paradise and from there on I was hooked also, buying 6 more over the years. They have stayed with me after several house moves but havent had the courage to read Moobli as i knew it would be sad. A few days ago started Moobli(bought 1990 !) I'm halfway through it now and how lovely it is to be able to renew my interest in him, has there ever been a man so easy to read and join in his fantastic world.
My copy of A Last Wild Place is full of notes of his hints as to where the cottage was on Loch Shiel, penciled maps etc. In it I also found a full pagefrom Sunday Post 9/4/2006 with a good article about Mike....How i envy Maria's Memories !
So glad this thread is still live(started 2008) and thanks to all for all the information and their thoughts. I also enjoyed seeing and hearing him on Vicshere's September video link above.
I spent 2 weeks on Eileen Shona in a Selfcatering cottage with my dog trekking round his ground featured in Between Earth and Paradise, found his cottage, occupied. It was so good to talk to some who knew him there.
Thanks everyone |
