I also wonder why there is no group with an interest to Mike and his work on Facebook, most surprising. |

When i wrote to him he gave me his address so i dont think its a big secret however that must be his decision.
A gifted writer who has never had the recgnition he deserves.

Soloman | I totally agree. It seems very unfair he's not been honoured in any way.

| | | Re: Mike Tomkies - where is he now? I have stumbled across this discussion whilst researching Mike Tomkies books. My 10 year old daughter has developed a passion for wildlife and recently read Wildcat Haven. I am now trying to choose some books as Christmas gifts, but I am struggling to decide which would be the most appropriate - particularly as I was going to opt for Moobli, but read that this was a fairly distressing read. My daughter has been captivated by Mike Tomkies' writing, his anecdotes about his lifestyle as well as the descriptions about the wildlife. Trawling through Amazon it appears that some books are compilations of others and I'm getting a little confused! Any suggestions on where to start? |

| | | Re: Mike Tomkies - where is he now? I'd suggest 'last wild place' as an overview of his time at wildernesse
moobli can be a hard read and is also the least wildlife related
the only one i can think of thats a compilation is 'wild cat haven' - which compiles 'my wildernesse wildcats', and 'liane a cat from the wild'

| | | Re: Mike Tomkies - where is he now? I second 'A Last Wild Place' as a great introduction to Mike's books. After that, 'On Wing and Wild Water.' May I also recommend a book by Philip Coxon describing his summer as RSPB warden on North Uist: 'A Curlew in the Foreground' (David & Charles, 1988). 'The Shining Levels' by John Wyatt (Penguin 1976), based in the Lake District, is also a good read (recently reviewed in TGO magazine, I believe).
I hope you find something suitable in time for Christmas! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
