| | | Unidentified Moss
Can anyone please identify this moss? Photographed in a Surrey garden November 2011?? Also, any recommendations for a Beginner's Guide to UK Moss??
Many thanks in advance |

Unfortunately it's difficult to make out much detail on your photo so it could be many things.
Looking to the bottom right of your photo there is a sporophyte, again not quite enough detail, the lid of which would indicate a Brachythecium species. To me anyway
Mosses and Liverworts of Britain and Ireland. Published by The British Bryological Society is a great book to get started with.

Thankyou for your help.If I posted a better picture,as the moss was an off shoot of my attempt to photograph the fungus, would it be possible to identify. If this is the case what would I need to photograph.
Thankyou in advance

| | | Re: Unidentified Moss Hi Glyn. Firstly I must apologise, after re-reading my post it sounds as though I was being rude about your photograph, it wasn't meant so.
As always with such things the devil is in the detail and without the plant in hand most of the suggestions to an ID will be just that.
Anyway back to your moss. If possible find a patch that have sporophytes present, the more complete the better. Take one photograph focussing on the whole sporophyte and one focussing on the capsule.
Tease a plant away from the mass. What you need is a photograph of the whole green plant then one where the point of focus is on one of the stem leaves and one with the focus on one of the branch leaves.
In some cases what the moss is growing on (and size of course) can be diagnostic so as much info as you can muster is important.
Sure others will add to this.
Mosses make rewarding study, its refreshing to see you interested in them.

| | | Re: Unidentified Moss Hi Vince
I did not take it as being rude.I tried to photograph the fungus in the garden and the camera obviously thought I wanted a picture of the moss hence neither really in focus.I will attempt to do as you have suggested over the weekend and will post the results.I would love to know what it might be as it covers several ash logs we have in the garden.Thankyou for your helpful advice so far and I am really grateful for your suggestions.
Best Regards
