Some help with identification would be much appreciated. In early october I found this on a fallen tree trunk. |

Looks like a Dogtooth lichen Peltigera sp to me. Edit: I should read the thread properly, growing on a trunk, I am probably wrong with my suggestion then

Why do you think you are wrong? It looks very like illustrations of dog lichen.(peltigera hymenina) It was a very old fallen tree trunk. These colonies were very well established possibly in earth pockets.

I find it usually on grassland floors not on trunks - not to say the don't I'm just unsure

Definitely a Peltigera, and moss-covered stumps and trunks are good places to look for them too. I'll abstain from taking the ID further. |

I agree; definately a dog lichen (a Peltigera species).
