Bryum capillare with beaked capsules?

Hello all,

I have id a moss a Bryum capillare - growing in a pot in my garden - (wet) leaf features seem to fit (esp the light greenish hairpoint and leaf shape), seta is long and redish (but not strongly coloured), and capsule drooping. Am waiting for it to dry out to see if leaves corkscrew when dried!

My problem is that the capsules have a long beak and I am not aware that this is a feature of Bryum capillare. Can this moss have beaked capsules?

Hi laurangutan and welcome to WAB.

The short answer is no. Are you sure it is the capsule that is beaked and you are not mistaking the calyptra?

Yes thank you I think it is! Is this something that occurs on capsules in most species? I think I will get confused though by this an a beaked capsule - although I guess it is quite easy to see that it appears to be a sheath over the hood of the capsule as opposed to part of it.
