| | | New ID guide Despite being a keen botanist for many years, my knowledge of the lower plants is negligible, so many months ago there was a flyer for a new guide for Bryophytes (mosses/liverworts) in British Wildlife + it finally arrived in the post today.
Produced by the British Bryological Society it's:
Mosses + Liverworts of Britain + Ireland a field guide
ISBN: 978-0-9561310-1-0
Following the introduction there is a Gallery of basic topography, followed by a field key to commoner/distinctive species. The bulk of the book is then devoted to the species- one per page with 1-4 phtos, distribution map + text on ID, similar species + habitat.
I would say an essential purchase for anyone taking an interest in these often overlooked plants. As well as the scientific names (+synonyms) it does give the controversial new English names.
I paid for my copy so many months ago on a pre-publication offer so I don't remember the price which I can't see in the book. |

| | | Re: New ID guide Mines on order!
Tho I already have Watsons and Smiths - and the Smith one is particularly well illustrated - the drawings make a lot of sense when you have the plant in front of you or under the micro ......... but I'd like to see more photos of the plants in situ so that I can get closer to an ID from 'jizz' to begin with before begining to sperate similars out etc.
Looking forward to it and I may award myself a day at Eskdale off the back of it ............ the waterfall walk and the Filmy Fern as a reward at the end of the walk is a good winters day out!!

| | | Re: New ID guide My copy arrived today. And I have to say, with my limited knowledge/experience of mosses & liverworts, it looks like a superb volume. (By far the best book on this subject I've seen to date).
Unfortunately, it fully reinforces just how little I actually know about these fascinating plants.
Regards,
Mike. |
