| | Help with woodland species ID for uni project I'm doing a project on coppice woodland and ground flora in Hampshire.
I have a few samples that I couldn't identify - any help would be much appreciated.
All are in vegetative state.
This was growing on damp logs in heavy shade.
Maybe barren strawberry? Otherwise juvenile bramble leaves?
These two are the same plant.
Basal rosette, thin leaves with wavy edge, more or less hairless.
Growing under densely shading canopy.
Possibly a tree sapling? Distinctive leaf set-up.
Downy trifoliate on prostrate reddish coloured runners.
Growing beside path. Square stem, thin leaves. Completely hairless.
In rosette. Very thickly downy. Growing under shade.
Any suggestions would be a major help. I have more photos of most of them if needed.
Thanks!! |

| | | Re: Help with woodland species ID for uni project These are not definitive ID's but are meant to be helpful suggestions.
1 Looks very much like Three-nerved Sandwort, Moehringia trinervia
2 Not Barren Strawberry but young Bramble sounds good.
3 Bugle, Ajuga reptans, is a possibility.
4 Don't really know but something makes me think of a young Ash, Fraxinus excelsior
5 This looks to be Barren Strawberry, Potentilla sterilis
6 Self-heal, Prunella vulgaris, is a possibility.
7 Looks like a leaf of Betony, Stachys officinalis, but Betony leaves are only sparsely pubescent.
Hope this helps you,
Phil

Thanks for your help - and sorry for the very delayed reply!
I think you're right about the sandwort. And I've looked again at photos and descriptions of barren strawberry/bramble and I'd agree with your verdict!
I haven't had any luck finding other photos of very young ash saplings. It's hard to tell from looking at adult leaves.
So I'm not still not quite sure on that one - the woods I was in do contain ash, but also a lot of birch and some sycamore - do you think it could be either of these?
I think you're right that the betony-type leaf is of that family, so I'll have a good read of the descriptions etc and see if I can figure it out.
Not sure on the other two - bugle and self-heal don't look quite right.
Both of these samples had quite thin (rather than fleshy) leaves and were definitely hairless.
I'll keep looking though.
Thanks for all your suggestions!
