The small pic next to your featured one (Unknown flowering shrub) is Leycesteria! If you have it the birds will spread the seeds all over. Your plant is definitely not a Jerusalem artichoke.

It has finally flowered and it turns out that it is Leycesteria formosa. Thanks for all the advice. I'm very relieved!
