Is this a horsetail of some kind?
It was pretty big

Certainly not Equisetum species. It is a Monocot bud, I suspect an Asphodelus species.

Thanks for that I was really confused over it. I thought it was an Equisetum because it looks like horsetails when they come up in spring.

I think it is the young flower-buds of a Red-hot-poker (Kniphofia sp.)
