| | | Star Shaped Mosses I took the first two pics in Lady Dixon Park, Belfast. the same species seems to be growing in both photos but I was also wondering if there is a second species growing in the second pic. The third photo was taken at Peatlands Park raided bog in N.Ireland. The moss is also star shaped but is much taller than in the first two pics. IDs would be much appreciated.
Thanks, John. |

| | | Re: Star Shaped Mosses Mosses aren't my strong point....if I have one at all ....but the first two pics look like Common Hair Cap - Polytrichum commune. (No other moss forms such tall tussocks)
There is a similar species Polytrichum formosum but it has shorter stems and capsule stalks....apparently!
I'm not 100% sure re my ID though.

| | | Re: Star Shaped Mosses If I was having to guess I'd say, based on habitat alone, the third photo is most likely to be Polytrichum commune whilst the first two could well be Polytrichum formosum. There's sitting on the fence for you

| | | Re: Star Shaped Mosses I know nowt about mosses, but Polytrichum commune is one I do know, there is a lot of it about and it looks like it to me too.
