| | | fruiting moss?? im not sure if i am posting this in the right place or not,
i saw this yesterday and from a distace of 8ft it looked like a mass of white hairs, which do not appear so dense when viewed from close up,
are the white stalks the fruiting part of the moss/lichen ??
there seem to be two differrent types, one has a black "seed" like head and the other a star shaped "flower" head,

definitely a leafy liverwort - note the cross-shapes in your photo where the sporocarps have split . . . see attached photo of Lophocolea heterophylla:

Chris | Hi Chris, thanks for that info, the pic of yours looks to be the same one as i found,
there is more to the mosses and lichens than meets the eye, some very intersting ones have been posted on here ,especially the ones by Jenny, the Baeomyces types in particular, fascinating stuff,
