| | | Myxo of the day!! Oh come on, it was only a matter of time wasn't it?
Let's face it, judging by the name alone 'slime moulds' don't sound too appealing to the layman do they?
I reckon we need a thread to celebrate their beauty and diversity, and of course show off some of the excellent photography I've witnessed recently!
I'll start us off with Didymium nigripes, found this afternoon on an oakleaf in (mostly) coniferous forest:
Curiously there seem to be less than 5 West Sussex county records for this relatively common species, which goes to show how overlooked and under-recorded they can be.
Happy hunting, Nick.

I think this needs a day or so to mature....
Cheers,

| | | Re: Myxo of the day!! Despite allegedly being one of the most common myxo's in Britain, it's the first time I've seen it. Comatricha nigra:-
I like the way that the stalks, columella's, and capillitia remain, like skeletonised versions of the sporangia.

Mike. |

| | | Re: Myxo of the day!! Hi all
Another fairly common species from today: Craterium minutum:
Looking rather pretty on a pine needle, I'm sure you will agree!
If you look hard enough, you can just make out the large white capillitial lime nodes in amongst the dark spore mass .
Cheers,
Nick

(OK - it was several days ago actually, but I've only just got around to uploading the mature photo).

I can't seem to get any decent photos of this species, despite it being so pretty - I think because it can be so reflective (and a little untidy).
Were yours taken in the field?
Cheers,
Nick

Nick | Hi Nick,
These were taken at home.
Just using daylight through window, (from left hand side).
With a white paper "reflector" to reduce contrast and throw some light back on right hand side.

| | | Re: Myxo of the day!! Physarum album ( P.nutans):-
I was quite pleased with this, not only because I managed to produce a decent photo, but because for once, instead of being open to the vagueries of my limited experience in the judgement and interpretation of these things, the microscopy revealed spore sizes (8-11microns) and ornamentation, and capillitia remnants with spindle shaped nodes exactly matching the species description in Ing.
