Moths on cold winter nights

Probably I should know the answer to this, , but all week I have been struck by how many moths appear in the headlights when I'm driving home after dark. I'm wondering how they continue to be active when butterflies aren't - re cold, food sources, etc. Thanks for any help!

Some moths are well known to have an anti-freeze like substance in their blood which enable the ones like the Winter Moth to fly in sub-zero temperatures.

They are tough little blighters aren't they! I just love 'em!!

Thanks naturegirl - am off to google Winter Moth then, to see how they do it! Yes, great to see, although slows me down on the track home, to make sure they don't get hit!

I have a Robin here and through either accident or design it triggers my porch light then waits for moths and mosquito like insects.
