| | | Lovely micro for ID Anyone got any idea what this lovely little moth is? Also any tips on how you manage to ID micros would be most appreciated. I don't have any books on them as I am now waiting for the new Lewington book on micros to come out but I was wondering if some people manage to ID them using the internet. Any help would be much appreciated! |

| | | Re: Lovely micro for ID Lozotaeniodes formosanus quite a local species, much pine woodland around?
Not sure on IDing things from the internet it can be quite dodgy for insects. |

| | | Re: Lovely micro for ID If you use sites such as UK Moths and Hants Moths for ID you shouldn't go far wrong. From the home page of UK Moths there is a link to view families with thumbnails, that can be useful, look at 'thumbnail index'.
On UK Moths, once I think I have the correct family I click on either the family or subfamily link from a species page, that will give you a list. Look at the first one in the list, then use the 'next' arrow to go through the list. By dragging the page to the left side and having your photo on the right side you can more easily compare as you go through the list.
I always google to find more examples to compare once I find something which looks close or like it but you do need to know which sites are reliable. I think most serious mothing sites are quite reliable. Hants Moths usually gives some good tips so it's a good idea to use both sites.

| | | Re: Lovely micro for ID Thanks for the ID. I caught it in my garden and to my knowledge there isn't much pine woodland around though some people around here do have pines in their garden, but not many.
I know of Hants moths and UKmoths. I have used them both. I may start to try to have a go at some micros. Really though I just cannot wait to get this new book! |
