| | | Hummingbird Hawk Moth Yesterday saw a Hummingbird Hawk Moth hovering over the buddleia. rushed to get camera but it had gone. Looked around for 15 mins but no sign. One came in the conservatory last year and unlike butterflies it found its way out again after a few minutes. Saw one 10- 15 years ago so quite rare around here.
Although the buddleia are out in full bloom now there are hardly any butterflies or bees. 25 years ago there would be 200 + butterflies, now a dozen would be amazing. Last year we had about 6 or 7 Admirals and Tortoiseshells. Even the Cinnabar Moths have disappeared, though I leave a few Ragworts for them.
Saw one Red Admiral and one white butterfly and a dark brown possibly with speckles, but too far and too quick to be sure if it was a speckled Wood. We do have alot of Clothes Moths though! Occasionally see a small blue butterfly hovering around the Laurel but can never get near it for a photo, or to identify it.
But I do live on a Main Road and alot of new housing has gone up with no gardens so I suppose they can't get here easily anymore.
Do see a Dragonfly now and then. |

| | | Re: Hummingbird Hawk Moth It's been a good year for Hummingbird Hawkmoths with many reported quite widely, though they've managed to avoid me. Cornwall is usually a pretty good county for these stunning moths so you've got an advantage there!
Your brown does sound like a Speckled Wood + from the behaviour I'd put good money on your blue being a Holly Blue. |

| | | Re: Hummingbird Hawk Moth The Butterfly Conservation website has a map showing sightings of Hummingbird Hawk Moths in the UK this year, and the facility to add your own sightings: Humming-bird Hawk-moth - Butterfly Conservation
I've been lucky enough to see 3 this year, after not having seen one for many years.

| | | Re: Hummingbird Hawk Moth Worth looking out for the caterpillars of the hummingbird hawk moth as well. Found one fully grown green form feeding on ladys bedstraw the other week in Warwickshire at Ufton Fields. Record sent to relevant recorder and Atropos web site.
